The Kansas Food Bank, with the help of local residents, qualified to receive a grant from Wal-Mart of $45,000 this week, Food Bank director Brian Walker said Wednesday.
Wal-Mart created a Facebook page recently, encouraging people across the country to vote for their favorite Food Bank; the top 40 winners get $45,000 apiece to help buy food for the needy, Walker said.
Local residents gave the Kansas Food Bank 3,075 votes, enough to put the Food Bank in the top 40, Walker said.
The money will help pay for the Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids program, which supplies backpacks of food on Fridays for children in schools who might not have enough food to eat on weekends, Walker said.
To donate to the Food Bank, call 316-265-3663, go to: kansasfoodbank.org, or send money to Kansas Food Bank, 1919 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67211.
