A ceremonial groundbreaking was held Wednesday for the new parking garage and rental facility at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport. Construction is scheduled to begin June 3.

The new facilities are part of the $40 million project that includes building a new terminal. The garage and terminal are set to open in the spring of 2015.

Parking spaces will increase by more than 1,200, according to city officials who took part in the groundbreaking.

During the construction period for the parking garage, there will be a reduced amount and short-term parking.

Other features include:

• A four-level parking garage with 1,600 spaces and potential for expansion.
• Covered rental car pick-up and drop-off on the first level.
• Rental car agency customer service center adjacent to the garage.
• New surface parking, including close-in, economy and park and ride.
