The Kansas Supreme Court next Monday will consider whether Austin N. Jones acted in self-defense as part of his appeal of two first-degree murder convictions.
Jones was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus 38 months for two counts of first-degree murder, one count of aggravated assault and one count of criminal possession of a firearm resulting from an apartment parking lot shooting that killed Emmanuel “Easy” Delatorre and Jesus Esparza, according to the court. The killings happened in July 2009 at an apartment complex near Zoo Boulevard and West Street in Wichita.
The court will consider whether Jones was immune from prosecution because the state didn’t show that the defendant did not act in self-defense and whether the prosecutor misstated the law in closing arguments.
