After an attempted robbery this weekend over a Craigslist item, Wichita police urge people to use caution when buying or selling items on the popular website.
Shortly after 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Wichita police were called to the 8000 block of East Grail, near Harry and Rock, after two men in their early 20s tried to purchase a PlayStation system. The men were in their vehicle and while they were negotiating the purchase, the male seller tried to climb into the vehicle and take their money.
When the would-be buyers tried to drive away, the same man pulled out a handgun from his backpack and fired five to six shots at the vehicle, according to Sgt. Bart Brunscheen, spokesman for the Wichita Police Department.
The man who tried to take the cash, along with another man, then fled the scene on foot.
The vehicle was not hit but officers recovered a bullet from the scene along with footprints.
“We encourage people to always meet at public locations, take someone with you to help you gauge the situation,” Brunscheen said. “Any time you bring a large amount of cash, be cautious. I think if you can use some type of check, to me that’s personally safer as long as it will be accepted. I want citizens to be aware. Do not do cash deals.”
