A Wichita man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death with a tire tool in 2009 has been sentenced to more than 21 years in prison.

Yusef Samad Sr., 35, was originally charged with first-degree murder but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter. He also was convicted of aggravated burglary, aggravated child endangerment and two counts of violating a protection from abuse order.

Samad was charged with stabbing Mechelle Reed, 34, to death on July 12, 2009, in her home in the 2700 block of North Estelle and with endangering Reed’s 12-year-old son. Reed filed several requests for protection from abuse from Samad before her death.
