A 5-year-old girl in southwest Wichita suffered second-degree burns Saturday when a man taking care of her poured boiling water on her, police said.

Lt. Doug Nolte said the man, who was related to the girl, became upset that she had taken some food into the living room. As he was scolding her, he was also holding a pot of boiling water, and he poured the water on the girl, Nolte said. She was burned on the back, face and arms.

The girl wasn’t given immediate medical attention. When the biological father arrived to pick her up, neither the child’s mother nor the man taking care of the child told him about the injuries, Nolte said.

The father noticed the burns and took the girl to Wesley West for treatment.

An investigation in under way. No arrests have been made.
