Two children playing in a nearly dry creek Saturday found a dead man lying at the bottom of a walled-off and fenced drainage area near Pinecrest and Orme, police say.
Wichita police Capt. Hassan Ramzah said a neighbor reported seeing the man walking in the residential neighborhood recently but not on Saturday, when the body was discovered. His age and identity are unknown and police also didn’t know immediately how long the man had been there.
Ramzah confirmed that the man’s body was fully clothed and said he didn’t know whether the body had suffered trauma. He also said it was too early to determine whether the death was suspicious.
After the children – both around age 11 – saw the body, someone flagged down a Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy who was in the area writing a ticket, Ramzah said. The deputy notified other authorities, he said.
At the scene Saturday, some officers interviewed people living in the small one-story houses near the intersection, southeast of Kellogg and Oliver. Others stood above the body, peering down at an officer who inspected it while he awaited the coroner’s arrival. The body lay on a patch of weeds near the water.
A woman in an SUV, who stopped to ask why police were in the area, shook her head and said, “Wow,” when she learned of the body.
Meanwhile, a few spectators watched police work; others enjoying the warm, sunny weather walked by with young children, unaware that a body had been found.
