Police who were called to check the welfare of a 44-year-old man found him with knife wounds to his side in a west Wichita apartment Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
According to neighbors, the man was involved in fight with a former tenant of the apartment Friday night, which led to the stabbing, Wichita police Sgt. Steve Yarberry said.
“The victim thought he’d been bit under the left arm,” Yarberry said. “Turns out he was stabbed.”
The man was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis in critical condition but was released late Saturday afternoon, Yarberry said.
Officers arrived at the apartment in the 7200 block of West First Street, near Ridge Road, after the man’s niece reported at 1:18 p.m. that she received a text message saying he had died, a Sedgwick County dispatcher said. She asked authorities to check on her uncle, and that’s when police found him.
Authorities don’t know who stabbed the man because he refused to cooperate with police when asked about the confrontation, Yarberry said.
