A 42-year-old man was arrested early Saturday after trying to strangle a woman with a bed sheet and phone cord at an east Wichita motel, police said.

Officers were called to the motel in the 6300 block of East Kellogg Drive about 2 a.m., police said, and they stopped the man as he sped away in a red Cadillac.

The 26-year-old woman in the motel room told police the man also tried to rape her. She declined medical treatment.

The man, who said the woman was an ex-girlfriend, was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on multiple counts that included suspicion of aggravated battery, attempted rape and driving under the influence.
