Mike Burrus had other plans.

The 58-year-old president of Kapaun Mount Carmel High School was planning to retire at the end of the school year. His successor had already been named. But his friends and family urged him to reconsider.

On Tuesday, Burrus was named the new director of Wichita’s Catholic Charities by Bishop Michael O. Jackels and the Catholic Charities board. Burrus will begin his new job Sept. 3.

“With the Catholic Charities position open, I was receiving lots of encouragement from people to take a look at it,” Burrus said. “I’ve enjoyed working with the church, and I thought, ‘Well, maybe I have one last run left in me.’ ”

Cynthia Colbert resigned in December as director of Wichita Catholic Charities to become the director of Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. In the meantime, Melissa Grelinger has been the nonprofit agency’s interim director.

For the past 12 years, Burrus has been president of Kapaun Mount Carmel. He said Tuesday he felt called to pursue the Catholic Charities position.

“Catholic Charities has so many exciting programs, I’m excited about doing this,” he said.

Burrus is a native Wichitan. He graduated from Wichita State University in 1977 and is a certified public accountant. For more than three decades, he has served on numerous boards and committees in the Wichita area, including the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Wichita State University Foundation.

In 2004, he was a recipient of the WSU Alumni Achievement Award and named the Fundraising Executive of the Year in 2007 by the Wichita Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
