An all-volunteer effort will serve lunches to Wichita children at 14 sites on weekdays during spring break.

Wichita public schools’ spring break is March 18-22, but lunches will start being served at most of the sites the previous Thursday and Friday – March 14-15 – because school is out for in-service days.

Partners for Wichita and Kansas Food Bank are joining with individual volunteers to provide and serve about 3,500 meals during its “Filling the Gap – Lunches for Kids” program, said Sally Fahrenthold, coordinator of the effort for Partners for Wichita.

This spring break will have twice has many sites as last year.

“The need is much greater,” Fahrenthold said, “but we still know we’re not meeting all the needs. We want to get the sites as close as possible to the children.”

Box lunches will be purchased from the food bank and served from noon to 1 p.m. The lunches are free to youths 18 and younger. No registration is needed.

To enhance the meals, the group is requesting donations of Cuties or clementine mandarin oranges, fruit cups that don’t need refrigeration, wrapped crackers or pudding cups.

Food donations can be taken to the food bank or to the sites between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays. Contributions to help purchase lunches should be sent to Partners for Wichita at 925 N. Waco, Wichita, KS, 67209 or to the Kansas Food Bank, 1919 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS, 67211, with “Filling the Gap” designated on the check’s memo line.
