At least in hindsight, it wasn’t such a good idea for a woman and her 4-year-old son to take “Psycho Mike” to the liquor store Saturday night.
Because the man known as Psycho Mike pulled out a hatchet. The good thing is, the woman and her son got away unharmed, and Wichita police caught their man and the vehicle he stole, police Sgt. Bart Brunscheen said Sunday.
The incident began to unfold, Brunscheen said, around 10:40 p.m. Saturday when a 26-year-old woman drove with her 4-year-old son and a 31-year-old acquaintance known as Psycho Mike to a liquor store at Lincoln and Woodlawn. The woman got out and bought a bottle of booze, but when she returned, Psycho Mike had moved to the driver seat.
He held up a hatchet and told the woman he would kill her if she didn’t get out of the car, Brunscheen said. The woman was able to get her son and herself safely away before Psycho Mike drove off in the black 1997 Ford Explorer, he said.
Sunday morning, an officer on his way to work saw a vehicle that looked like it was stalled. Later, after learning of the liquor store incident, the officer realized the vehicle he had seen matched the description, and he returned to where he had spotted the vehicle, near Pawnee and I-135.
The officer found Psycho Mike in the vehicle, identified him and arrested him on suspicion of aggravated assault and aggravated robbery, Brunscheen said. The officer also found a hatchet, Brunscheen said.
