Before a gunman shot a fellow teenager in the hip early Sunday on a Wichita street, police said, the shooter reportedly asked, “Are you trippin’?”
The 15-year-old victim, initially reported in critical condition, went by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center. An update on his condition wasn’t available later Sunday, police Sgt. Bart Brunscheen said. Brunscheen gave this account:
The victim and a 16-year-old man were walking in the street near 12th and Green at about 12:15 a.m. when a maroon Buick four-door rolled up slowly from behind. Several people got out of the car, and one, described as a man about 16 and wearing a red sweatshirt and black pants, approached the two teens and asked, “Are you trippin’?” He pulled a black revolver from the front of his waistband and fired once, wounding the 15-year-old in the hip. Four people ran back to the Buick, last seen going north on Green.
Police searched the area but didn’t find the suspects. A second suspect was described as wearing a gray sweatshirt and gray pants, and all four were men around 16 years old, Brunscheen said.
The shooting was reported from the 1300 block of North Estelle, a block from where the shooting occurred. There had been a preliminary report that the shooting happened on Estelle, but it occurred near 12th and Green, police said.
