A Wichita man who was charged with first-degree murder in the 2009 stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter.
Yusef Samad Sr., who was scheduled to stand trail this week in Sedgwick County District Court, also pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary, aggravated child endangerment and two counts of violating a protection from abuse order.
Samad, 35, was charged with stabbing Mechelle Reed to death with a tire tool on July 12, 2009, in her home in the 2700 block of North Estelle and with endangering Reed’s 12-year-old son. Reed filed several requests for protection from abuse from Samad before her death.
Samad, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, will be sentenced April 11 by District Judge Greg Waller.
