Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer’s Youth Council will host a teen legislative forum at 4 p.m. Friday in the first floor City Hall board room, 455 N. Main.
A panel of three legislators will participate in a discussion of issues from the current Kansas Legislature session: Sen. Garrett Love, R-Montezuma; Rep. Jim Howell, R-Wichita; and Rep. Brandon Whipple, D-Wichita. The group will be introduced by Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau, D-Wichita, chair of the south-central Kansas legislative delegation.
The Mayor’s Youth Council includes 32 Wichita high school students. Members organize an annual legislative agenda, volunteer events, charitable giving campaigns, drug prevention campaigns and produce “MYC in the ICT,” a television show.
Through participation, members learn about local government, develop leadership skills and gain the tools to become engaged citizens. Members elect a mayor, vice mayor, manager, clerk and committee chairs. Others represent the general council and serve on standing committees. Meetings are held monthly.
