Police arrested a man they say who was attempting to steal copper from the basement of a fire-damaged fourplex Wednesday afternoon.
Officers were called to the fourplex at 306 S. Hydraulic shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday when maintenance employees for the apartment complex there spotted the man in the basement, Lt. Doug Nolte said.
When officers investigated, “it appeared he was tampering with or taking the copper plumbing still in the apartments,” Nolte said.
The 39-year-old man had a key that opened a door to the basement, and officers found evidence of theft in his possession, Nolte said. Investigators are now checking to see if more than one person is involved in stealing copper from the damaged fourplex.
