Forensic evidence is needed to confirm the cause and time of death for a man whose body was found in northeast Wichita on Wednesday morning, police said Thursday.
The death remains suspicious, homicide Lt. Todd Ojile said.
“The body was pulled off the road and into some bushes there” near K-96 and Hillside, Ojile said.
That suggests the man may be the victim of foul play, he said.
“There was no attempt to conceal the body,” Ojile said.
It was spotted by surveyors driving along a frontage road just before 9 a.m. on Wednesday. While there were signs of trauma on the body, Ojile said, they may have been the result of exposure to the cold temperatures earlier this week. The man’s name is being withheld pending the notification of relatives.
He was not homeless, Ojile said. He was last seen by his girlfriend at a west Wichita business on Friday night and she reported him missing on Sunday night.
“Some of the circumstances surrounding the last time he was seen makes it suspicious,” Ojile said without elaborating. “The girlfriend was worried that something had happened to him.”
The girlfriend is not a suspect in the investigation, he said.
“We’ve got a lot of evidence and a lot of other things to go through right now to determine what exactly happened here,” Ojile said.
