A photo on a social media site led to the discovery of a handgun in a student’s book bag at El Dorado High School on Monday, police said.

El Dorado Police Chief Tom Boren said information he was given indicates a fellow student saw the photo of the student holding a gun on the social media site and alerted the school’s police officer. After seeing the photo himself, the officer checked the student’s book bag and found the gun.

The student was then taken into custody, Boren said.

“At no time were students or staff threatened,” a letter and voice mail from Principal Kevin House sent to parents and guardians on Monday stated. “The matter has now been turned over to local authorities.

“We want to commend those who reported this. Our students and staff know that when they see or hear about something that threatens others, they are to report it immediately. We appreciate their diligence in this.”

Jackie Clark, director of public information for the El Dorado school district, declined via e-mail to answer questions about the incident, calling it “an ongoing investigation and a student matter.”

“We are thankful that we were able to report the weapon was recovered without incident and the student is no longer in our schools,” said a statement issued by the district Tuesday. “We appreciate support from parents encouraging students to speak up and never compromise their safety or that of others. Their efforts along with the diligence of our staff and students contributed to this situation begin resolved quickly and without incident.”
