Authorities are trying to confirm the identity of a man whose face was eaten by a dog after the man died in an apartment near downtown Wichita.
Residents of Riverpark Plaza Apartments became concerned when they hadn’t seen the man in about a week; the dog was barking and behaving restlessly, Wichita police Lt. Doug Nolte said.
They had opened a window to the man’s apartment at 400 W. Central earlier this month and were providing food and water for the dog, which is a pug mix, Nolte said. When the tenant still hadn’t been seen by Saturday, the neighbors notified a maintenance worker. He entered the man’s apartment at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday and found the body.
“The dog had been feeding on the man’s body,” Nolte said, including eating his face.
Enough of the body had been eaten away that it was not possible to readily identify him, Nolte said. The body had also begun to decompose.
Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to confirm the man’s identity. The tenant of the apartment was a man in his 40s who suffered from Parkinson’s disease and also drank heavily, Nolte said.
The dog is being held by animal control, he said.
