Homeless man found dead in Riverside Park restroom

Friends of a homeless man who reportedly lived in the restroom at Central Riverside Park found his body in the building Friday afternoon, police say.

Friends of a homeless man who reportedly lived in the restroom at Central Riverside Park found his body in the building Friday afternoon, police say.

The 49-year-old man likely died of natural causes, Wichita police Sgt. Steve Yarberry said. Those who knew the man told police he had been ill, and they were checking on him when they found his body shortly before 2 p.m.

Witnesses told police they last saw the man alive earlier Friday, Yarberry said.

There was no apparent trauma to the body, he said.

Central Riverside Park, at 720 Nims, near downtown, has heated restrooms, Yarberry said. The warm building regularly attracts homeless people, who may not have other shelter available during the season’s chilly weather.

“That’s common when it gets colder in the winter,” he said, “because it’s heated in the bathroom.”
