St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wichita is inviting the public to join in a prayer service Thursday for those killed in the Newtown, Conn., school shootings and for others who have experienced violence recently.

The service is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the church at 925 N. Waco.

“You don’t even have the language to explain it,” St. Paul’s Pastor Dave Fulton said of the shooting in Connecticut. “It’s beyond comprehension.

“To me, the cause is in the cultural violence, and we change that with prayer, in my opinion.”

In addition to praying for victims in Newtown, Fulton said visitors are encouraged to gather for peace after two police officers were fatally shot in Topeka on Sunday.

“I work here with the police all the time, so we need to pray because it is very appropriate at this time,” Fulton said. “Prayer changes the culture in which we live.”
