Sammy Smith Jr. didn’t show up for a workout as expected on that September day in 2009, so family members went to check on him.
They found him shot to death on the couch of his residence in the 600 block of North New York, Wichita Police Lt. Todd Ojile said. Three years later, police have no leads or suspects in the case.
“He did have a criminal history,” Ojile said of Smith, who was 37 when he was killed. “He had ties to a local gang here in Wichita.”
Smith was shot once. The suspect or suspects searched the house and took a number of unknown items. Some of Smith’s personal property was found in a field two or three blocks from his house, Ojile said.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
Tips can be called in to 316-267-2111, texted to CRIMES (274637) and beginning their text with TIP217 or on the Web at www.wsccs.com. All methods are confidential.
