Dodge City has been named to True West magazine’s top true western towns because of its historic heritage.
The city will be featured in the magazine’s February 2013 issue, sold at newsstands beginning Jan. 1.
For the past eight years, the magazine has presented an annual award listing its top 10 favorite Old West towns. In 2009, Wichita was selected for its efforts to preserve the past and because of its heritage showcased through Old Cowtown Museum and Shepler’s Western Wear.
In a news release issued by True West, Dodge City was picked because of its role in American culture. It was the setting for the long-running TV series “Gunsmoke.”
The magazine ranked Dodge City as its second top town, behind Fort Smith, Ark.
Dodge City has historic buildings such as the George Hinkle House and the First Presbyterian Church, both built in 1880, and Boot Hill Museum. The town also features a 10-day festival known as Dodge City Days.
