Police are looking for a man witnesses say shot an 18-year-old man in the shoulder during a melee at a house party in north Wichita early Sunday morning.
There were between 60 and 70 people at the house party near 29th Street North and Meridian when a group of people not invited showed up at the gathering, Sgt. Troy Nedbalek said. An argument broke out as people in the house tried to get the recently arrived group to leave.
“It escalated out in the front yard” to a fight that involved 15 to 20 people, Nedbalek said.
The brawl shifted to a ditch across the street from the house, he said. Witnesses said one man then pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the upper left shoulder at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Nedbalek said.
He was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis via private vehicle, where he was treated and released.
“We’ve got several witnesses that have identified an individual” connected to the shooting, Nedbalek said.
While police have tracked down the vehicle he left the scene in, they have yet to find him. Though some of the people at the gathering may have been gang members, Nedbalek said, the shooting doesn’t appear to be gang-related.
Based on what he’s learned, he said, “it was more over a girl.”
