Two Fort Riley soldiers killed in Afghanistan

Two 1st Infantry Division soldiers from Fort Riley have been killed in combat in Afghanistan.

Two 1st Infantry Division soldiers from Fort Riley have been killed in combat in Afghanistan.

Capt. James D. Nehl, 37, of Gardiner, Ore., was killed Friday in Ghazni Province, when his unit was attacked by small-arms fire. Staff Sgt. Matthew Stiltz, 26, of Spokane, Wash., was killed Monday in Zerok when his unit was hit by indirect fire.

Nehl was infantry officer assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment. Stiltz was with the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment. Both were with the 4th Brigade Combat Team

Nehl joined the Army in 2007 and arrived at Fort Riley in May. This was his first deployment to Afghanistan, but he had previously served a tour in Iraq.

Stiltz, who came to Fort Riley in 2006, had served two previous tours in Iraq.
