A 58-year-old man was arrested after he started a fire in a North Broadway motel and then threw the flaming object out of a window late Thursday night, police said.

A man near the Auto Motel at 1230 N. Broadway saw something on fire thrown out a hotel window shortly after 11 p.m., Lt. Doug Nolte said. He then saw a man and woman run from the motel.

He called 911, and officers investigating the incident called the bomb squad because they suspected a possible meth lab, Nolte said.

When the bomb squad entered Room 142, they found chemicals that can be used to start a fire but no precursor ingredients used in the manufacture of meth.

The man was arrested following questioning. The 37-year-old woman was questioned but released when investigators determined she did not participate in the man’s efforts to start a fire by mixing chemicals, Nolte said.
