Authorities on Monday identified the Wichita man struck and killed as he walked across a street last week.

Police said Michael A. Spires, 49, was struck by an eastbound car at about 7:15 p.m. Friday near 17th and Piatt, Lt. Scott Heimerman said. “The driver never saw him” prior to the collision, he said.

The impact knocked Spires into the westbound lane, where he was struck by a second car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Given the extensive damage on the first vehicle to strike him, Spires was almost certainly dead before he was struck a second time, Heimerman said.

The 69-year-old driver of the first car sustained a superficial laceration in the collision, but she was not transported to a local hospital for treatment. The 28-year-old woman driving the second car was not hurt.

That area is poorly lit, Heimerman said, and Spires was wearing a dark coat. Neither speed nor driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs are factors in the incident, he said.

Spires is the fifth pedestrian and 19th person killed in traffic accidents so far this year in Wichita, Lt. Joe Schroeder said.
