A motorcyclist is in critical condition after a traffic crash in south Wichita, police said at the scene.

The accident happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Pawnee and Walnut, between Seneca and McLean. Wichita police Lt. E.J. Bastian said a woman driving a four-door passenger car turned west off of Walnut in front of the motorcyclist, who was driving east on Pawnee.

The motorcyclist — a man — crashed into the car’s driver’s side door, Bastian said. A witness told The Eagle the man was thrown from the motorcycle. Bastian said it appears the man was driving the speed limit and that the woman failed to yield to his right of way, based on witness reports.

The man was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis in critical condition with severe bleeding from his head, Bastian said. Firefighters first on scene told police the man was not wearing a helmet, he said.

The woman was “pretty shook up” but uninjured, Bastian said, and refused medical treatment at the scene.

Traffic on Pawnee between Seneca and Walnut was shut down for several hours Friday afternoon as authorities worked at the scene.
