Wichita police find 2-year-old on groggy driver’s lap

Wichita police responding to a 911 call about 5 a.m. Tuesday found a car stopped at 13th Street and Cleveland not just with a driver who seemed groggy.

The 30-year-old mother had a 2-year-old child on her lap, buckled in with her, and an infant in a car seat in the back, police said Wednesday. It wasn’t clear where the woman had driven from; she has a Park City address, police Lt. Doug Nolte said.

Someone saw the car not moving and young children inside and called 911.

The car wasn’t running and had its flashers on. Officers got the children, who had no injuries, safely out of the car.

Officers were concerned that the mother might have a medical condition, Nolte said. She had said that she had run out of gas and was waiting for her husband, Nolte said. The woman was taken to a hospital to be evaluated, and police are waiting on the medical evaluation, he said.

The woman has not been arrested.

The child’s father picked up the children, Nolte said.
