Police continue searching Monday night for a man who robbed the Intrust Bank inside the Dillons store at 21st and Maize Road.
The robbery happened shortly before 6 p.m. Monday when a man carrying a handgun robbed the bank, police said.
The robbery was reported to emergency dispatchers at 5:53 p.m.
At first, Wichita police responded to what they considered a hold-up alarm at the Dillons, said Sgt. Drew Seiler, spokesman for the Wichita Police Department.
“It quickly changed to a robbery in progress,” Seiler said. “He entered the business demanding money of the manager. He indicated he had a bomb. He brought a bag of his own.”
The loss is undetermined.
The scene at the Dillons on 21st and Maize on Monday night was busy but subdued. Customers exclaimed dismay when they saw a sign in front of the branch bank that said: “Bank Temporarily Closed for Security Reasons.”
A police officer wearing blue latex gloves was taking fingerprints.
Three Wichita police cars and an unmarked white car were parked directly in front of the west entrance of the grocery store.
Police said the suspect is a white man in his 40s, about 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds. He has short brown hair and was wearing dark sunglasses, blue jeans and a black T-shirt.
Seiler said Wichita police and Federal Bureau of Investigation authorities are investigating the robbery. They are also working with area businesses, interviewing witnesses and employees in the store at the time of the robbery.
“We have contacted the area businesses around the intersection that do have video and we are in cooperation with those businesses,” he said.
No injuries were reported.
