A man suspected of robbing a Chase bank was arrested Tuesday evening after a car chase and shootout with a state trooper in Saline County, a Kansas Highway Patrol dispatch supervisor said.
Authorities found the man hiding more than two hours after he bailed out of an SUV on Tuesday southeast of Salina, the supervisor said. After the man — who was a passenger — jumped out, he fired a gun at the trooper then fled into a nearby field.
The trooper returned fire, the supervisor said.
The highway patrolman had located the vehicle shortly before 6:30 p.m., prompting a nine-minute chase, which reached speeds of 80 mph on a gravel road, the supervisor said.
A woman driving the SUV and an 11-year-old child sustained gunshot wounds during the shootout, the supervisor said, but it was unclear late Tuesday who fired the shots that hit them. Two other children also were in the vehicle at the time, she said; their conditions are unknown.
Authorities located the man shortly before 10 p.m., according to the supervisor. He was taken with possible injuries to a Salina hospital, where he remained in custody Tuesday night. He is believed to be the same man who robbed Firstbank of Chase around 10:30 a.m. that day, before fleeing in a green SUV, she said.
The woman and child were transported to a Salina hospital for treatment. The trooper, who suffered minor injuries from debris — possibly shattered glass — during the shootout, was also taken to the hospital, the supervisor said.
Canine units, aircraft, a special response team, Salina police and the Saline County Sheriff’s Office assisted KHP in the search.
