A 19-year-old Sedgwick County inmate died Saturday from an apparent seizure while being held in the Ottawa County jail, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.
He was pronounced dead at the Ottawa County Medical Center after having the apparent seizure while in jail, which is in Minneapolis, north of Salina.
The inmate was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on Sept. 5 on a 60-day commitment for charges stemming from two juvenile cases. He was transferred to Ottawa County’s facility due to overcrowding of Sedgwick County’s jail, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The inmate’s name was being withheld until family members have been notified.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office are investigating. The KBI is responsible for investigating all inmate deaths that are not ruled a natural death, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said.
