A man was arrested Thursday after he tried to run over his estranged wife and crashed into her house instead, police say.

The incident occurred just after 8:30 a.m. on Thursday in the 4600 block of Laclede, Lt. Doug Nolte said. Laclede is northeast of Seneca and 47th Street South.

The 31-year-old man and 30-year-old woman were arguing outside the house, the woman told police, and he eventually got into his vehicle and tried to run her over. She was able to evade the vehicle, which crashed into the side of the house.

A 5-year-old boy who was inside the house was so close to the point of impact that debris nearly struck him, Nolte said. The man dislodged the vehicle from the house and drove home, where he was arrested.

As police continued their investigation, Nolte said, they found living conditions so poor at the house on Laclede that the three children living there — the 5-year-old boy and two girls ages 4 and 2 — were placed in protective custody.
