A man suffered critical injuries Monday afternoon when an explosion occurred in a Park City business near a tank used to haul crude oil, a fire official said.

The man suffered inhalation injuries and burns around his mouth and nose and was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis, said Sedgwick County fire Division Chief Eddie Fajardo.

Someone was welding outside the tank and possibly ignited vapors coming from the top of the tank, Fajardo said. The explosion blew a hole, about 10 feet by 10 feet, in the roof over the tank. The explosion occurred in a large metal garage.

A sign outside the business, just east of the 4900 block of North Broadway, says Wichita Trailer Inc.

The explosion was reported at 2:53 p.m.

Firefighters used foam to prevent any other explosion or fire.
