The campaign of Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin is reacting angrily to a quote attributed to GOP activist Karl Rove that joked about the idea of Akin being murdered.
Bloomberg Businessweek's website reported Friday that Rove's comment came as he spoke to a GOP donors' breakfast at the Tampa Club in Florida.
The site says Rove quipped to the audience: "We should sink Todd Akin. If he's found mysteriously murdered, don't look for my whereabouts!"
A Rove spokesman didn't immediately return a call and email from The Associated Press seeking comment.
Akin's campaign issued a statement calling the quote deeply disturbing, given that the FBI has been investigating threats against Akin after his comments that women's bodies can shut down pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape."
"My staffers are living under threat. There's an FBI investigation into threats against the Congressman. There have been threats against his family and staff," Taylor said in an interview. "I am disappointed that type of statement given what's going on and the rhetoric and the current investigation."
Acting as the congressman's district director and spokesman, Taylor said he was surprised Rove would make comments like that about a congressman, especially in the aftermath of the shooting of former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona.
"After the Gabby Giffords incident and after the environment we've been working under with a lot of hyperbole...I was surprised someone with such a high profile position would make a comment about a seated congressman in such a fashion."
