The Vietnamese American Community Memorial, located across the Arkansas River from Exploration Place, was publicly dedicated Saturday with local elected officials and several hundred members of Wichita’s Vietnamese community in attendance. The memorial honors the Americans and South Vietnamese who fought together against the communist North Vietnamese in the Vietnam War.
“We honor those United States and Vietnamese soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the fight against communism,” Hai Truong told several hundred people assembled for the ceremony.
Local artist Babs Mellor was the lead sculptor on the project, which depicts two soldiers, one American and one Vietnamese.
