Power failure leads to watering restrictions in Andover, east Wichita

Wichita city officials are asking residents east of Rock Road and in Andover not to water their lawns until Saturday because of a power outage at a pumping station.

The outage has reduced water pressure in the affected area, said Alan King director of public works and utilities for the city. But there is sufficient pressure for household and business use and for fire safety.

Andover is included in the water restrictions because Wichita provides the water for the city, King said. A Westar crew is working to restore power to the pumping station at 21st Street and Webb Road, though as of late morning officials still didn’t know the cause.

Power should be restored by late today, but city officials say they’ll need several hours to test the system prior to resuming full service. Residents who have irrigation systems on timers should turn the systems off until Saturday, King said.
