A Wichita police officer shot and killed a Rottweiler dog Tuesday night after its owner lost control of the dog and it attacked two people, police said.
The incident happened at 11:10 p.m. in the 1700 block of S. Yale, police Lt. Doug Nolte said. Officers responded to a 911 call reporting the dog was attacking people in the street.
“When the dog was able to be isolated from individuals, it continued to be in a defensive posture and officers were concerned, as well as citizens that it would continue to attack,” Nolte said.
A 28-year-old man was taken to Via Christi Hospital on Harry for treatment of dog bites. A second person at the scene did not need medical treatment.
It marks the sixth animal shooting by an officer this year. Last year, there were 23 animal shootings.
Animal control officers are investigating.
