Three people have been arrested after an armed robbery in south Wichita led to a police chase that ultimately ended in a Sumner County field early Thursday morning, authorities said.
The incident began when an armed man walked into the After Dark Video store at 3721 South Broadway just before 2:50 a.m., fired a shot into the ceiling and ordered the two employees inside to the floor, Lt. Doug Nolte said.
The gunman took valuables and handguns from each of the two employees and stole cash from the store registers before leaving in a black Mazda SUV, Nolte said. A Wichita police officer spotted the SUV a short time later and recognized it as the vehicle reported in the robbery.
He tried to pull it over, but the driver sped away and a chase ensued. The chase continued into Sumner County, where the three suspects in the SUV were arrested without incident shortly before 3:15 a.m. in a field in the 1200 block of North Conway Springs Road, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said.
Over the course of the chase, Nolte said, the suspects tried to run a Conway Springs police officer’s car off the road. They also rammed a Wichita officer’s patrol car so many times it has had to be removed from service. Neither officer was injured.
The three people arrested were the 22-year-old man who robbed the store and the two inside the SUV: a 24-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy.
