The patriarch of the Mohlers, a large, rural Missouri family accused in an extensive incest case, has been released from jail.
When Burrell Mohler Sr., 79, left a courtroom in Liberty Friday on his own recognizance, they were his first free steps since being arrested along with four sons in November 2009.
All the men are accused of sexually assaulting young girls in the family over several years at a farm in Lafayette County. Some of the victims were forced into barnyard marriages with the men for the purposes of sex, documents say.
The elder Mohler of Independence, grandfather of the alleged victims, is charged with multiple counts of rape, sodomy and the use of a child in sexual performance.
Never miss a local story.
His brother who resided in Florida, Darrel Mohler, also was charged, but died in September.
The sons, David Mohler, 54, of Lamoni, Iowa; Burrell Mohler Jr., 55, of Independence; Jared Mohler, 50, of Columbia; and Roland Mohler, 49, of Bates City, Mo., still face multiple charges.
David Mohler appeared in Clay County Circuit Court on Friday to ask a judge to dismiss charges against him.
Earlier this week, the alleged six victims said they are eager to tell their stories in court.
