The Wichita Cabela’s store, in Regency Lakes Shopping Center at 21st and Greenwich, will open March 14, with a 10:45 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony before doors open at 11 a.m.

The opening day will be part of a weekend-long celebration featuring outdoor celebrities, special guests, giveaways and other events, company officials said Friday. Store hours will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

“We are eager to give our loyal customers in Wichita and the surrounding area a remarkable retail experience,” said Tommy Millner, the company’s chief executive, in a news release. “The Sunflower State is home to many people who share our passion for the outdoors.”

The store is Cabela’s second in Kansas, joining the Kansas City location. It will feature thousands of products, including hunting, fishing, camping and other outdoor gear, as well as clothing, gifts and furnishings.

It’s the first of five stores Cabela’s will open in 2012, joining Tulalip, Wash.; Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Rogers, Ark.; and Charleston, W.Va.

The Regency Lakes center also is part of a proposed STAR bond entertainment district at K-96 and Greenwich in northeast Wichita, including Super Target, World Market, Hampton Inn & Suites and several other retailers. The district, to be built around a multi-use sports complex, is under consideration by the Wichita City Council and the Kansas Department of Commerce.

The Cabela’s store exterior is designed in the traditional store model with log construction, stonework, wood siding and metal roofing. A large glass storefront will allow customers to view much of the store’s interior as they approach the building.

The interior will feature approximately 250 full-body animal mounts, including polar, grizzly and black bears, Cape buffalo, mountain lion, deer and elk. A 4,000-gallon aquarium featuring fish native to the area will be at the base of a replica mountain. The store also features a gun library and a bargain cave.

Cabela’s, founded in 1961 and based in Sidney, Neb., is a specialty retailer and direct marketer of hunting, fishing, camping and related outdoor merchandise.
