The Wichita City Council will be asked Tuesday to approve $250,000 for a right-of-way purchase as part of a project to widen 37th Street North between Broadway and Hydraulic.
Work is being done to improve the flow of semi-truck traffic in the industrial area, said Shawn Mellies, project manager for the city.
A center turn lane will be added to the two-lane road. To accommodate the trucks’ weight, the road will also be repaved with concrete instead of the current asphalt. Drainage issues will also be addressed by putting in a concrete culvert in the west portion of the project to replace ditches.
Work is not expected to begin until the spring of 2013 and would be completed late that year.
Never miss a local story.
The council had previously approved $263,000 for design work. The project will need to come back to the council later to fund the actual construction cost.
