The 2-year-old girl who was critically injured along with her parents in an explosion and fire that destroyed their home near downtown Wichita a few days before Christmas continues to show improvement at a local hospital.
Kymani Reed has been upgraded to fair condition at the burn unit of Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis. Her mother, 21-year-old Mikayla Frierson, remains in serious condition. Her father, 28-year-old Willbert Reed Jr., has been released from the hospital.
The Kansas Corporation Commission has opened an investigation into the blast and fire, which occurred just after 2 a.m. on Dec. 20 at 728 N. Minnesota, near Murdock and I-135. No utilities were hooked up to the house, fire officials have said, but gas somehow leaked into the house and was ignited — likely by a spark from a space heater.
Kansas Gas Service workers discovered a leak in a main line that parallels the house, but investigators are not sure if that leak is responsible for the accumulation of gas in the house. Lab tests on soil samples are being done, Fire Marshal Brad Crisp said earlier this week.
