WICHITA — A 31-year-old woman has been arrested after a 1-year-old boy was left inside a locked car for more than 15 minutes early Wednesday afternoon, police said.
A woman noticed the child in a car seat in a vehicle parked at a strip mall in the 6600 block of East 37th Street North at about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Lt. Doug Nolte said.
The temperature at the time was 99, with a heat index of 102. The woman kept an eye on the car as she went into Cici's Pizza nearby. No one came to the car, Nolte said.
When she left CiCi's, she stood by the car for a bit longer and then called 911. As officers were preparing to break into the car, the child's mother returned with two other children.
She had been shopping at the Dollar Tree store and left her sleeping infant inside the car, police say. The woman was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment. The three children, including 2- and 5-year-old boys, were placed in their father's care.
The infant was checked out by an EMS crew and did not suffer any heat-related health issues.
Police estimate the child had been locked inside the car for at least 16 minutes before he was removed, Nolte said.
