A shooting in the College Hill neighborhood Monday happened after an 18-year-old man tried to take off his shorts while walking down a sidewalk with his girlfriend, police said Tuesday.
In the process, the Wichita man hit the small-caliber handgun he was carrying on his waistband, said Lt. Randy Reynolds. The gun fell to the pavement and discharged, hitting his 19-year-old girlfriend in the chest.
Two residents saw the woman lying on the ground and called police, Reynolds said. The two thought her condition was related to the heat until they saw blood.
Officers and emergency services arrived at about 3 p.m. The boyfriend initially told them that a car had driven by and fired shots; however, he changed his statement, Reynolds said.
The two residents told police the man had tried to conceal a gun. Reynolds said the man left the area to hide the gun, but returned before police arrived.
Police arrested the man and recovered the gun. Police did not know why he was taking his shorts off.
The woman was transported to Wesley Medical Center, and her injuries were not life-threatening, Reynolds said. She was in fair condition Tuesday, according to the hospital.
