The best chance in a week of welcome – and needed – precipitation for the Wichita area comes this afternoon and evening, forecasters say.
But it’s only a modest chance, and it won’t be enough to keep the temperature from soaring well above 100 again. And the heat index is expected to climb as high as 108 as an excessive heat warning remains in effect for southern and southeast Kansas – including the Wichita area – until 9 p.m.
South-southwest winds will be in the teens this afternoon, gusts approaching 25 miles an hour in the evening.
Overnight temperatures will again dip just below 80, and forecasters say Wednesday will bring another slight chance of showers. Wednesday may also be the first day this week the temperature doesn’t reach 100 in Wichita.
But the triple digits are expected to return on Thursday and rage through the weekend.
