The Kansas Sampler Foundation today announced its annual We Kan! award winners, and the Wichita Eagle's Beccy Tanner is among them.
Tanner, who covers Kansas history for the Eagle, was recognized for "lifting rural Kansas with her pen."
The 2011 list of winners also includes Osawatomie's Grady Atwater, a champion of abolitionist John Brown, and Clearwater's Lonnie Stieben, an advocate for rural towns.
The awards were presented at the 19th annual Kansas Sampler Festival, which was last month in Leavenworth. Each winner was given an award plate made by Steve and Jane Fry of Elk Falls Pottery.
