Police have released the name of the 28-year-old man who died several hours after his motorcycle slammed into the side of an SUV turning at an intersection late Saturday night in far west Wichita.
Wade Titus of Derby was with a group of other motorcyclists riding north on 135th Street West, Lt. Joe Schroeder said. Several bikers had cleared the intersection of Douglas and 135th, with Titus somewhat behind them.
A 41-year-old woman driving an SUV south on 135th began to turn left at the intersection, and Titus slammed into the vehicle at about 11:25 p.m., Schroeder said.
A witness said the motorcycle appeared to strike the front of the SUV as it was turning.
Titus was thrown from his 2008 Kawasaki sport bike and landed on the ground. He was wearing a helmet, witnesses said. The SUV was knocked sideways by the impact and struck Titus again on the ground, Schroeder said.
Titus was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis, where he was pronounced dead at 5:32 a.m. Sunday.
Speed is considered a factor in the collision, Schroeder said. The driver of the SUV told police she did not see the motorcycle before impact.
