A 27-year-old woman considers herself fortunate to be home and alive after being struck by a pickup while walking to catch the bus in south Wichita Thursday morning.
Erica Smith said she was walking south on Meridian toward MacArthur and was in the crosswalk crossing with the light when she was hit by a Ford Ranger turning left from Meridian onto the entrance ramp for I-235 shortly after 6:30 a.m.
She was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis for treatment, and is now home recovering from a fractured nose, sprained wrist and three broken teeth.
"I'm pretty bruised up," she said.
Initial reports that she was walking on the ramp are incorrect, she said. She is a regular walker in that neighborhood with her boyfriend, she said, and they use crosswalks all the time.
"We abide by the law and expect others to do so as well," she said. "Unfortunately, I ended up getting hit."
