McPHERSON, Kan. | A former central Kansas police chief has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus five years for sex crimes involving children.
Mike Akins Jr., of Inman, was sentenced Tuesday in McPherson County District Court. KAKE-TV reports he’ll be eligible for parole in approximately 55 years.
Akins was the police chief of Inman when the crimes allegedly occurred in 2009.
He was convicted in January of 15 charges of molesting a girlfriend’s daughters, now 10, 11 and 15 years old. He was acquitted of four charges involving a boy in the family who is now 14 years old.
Akins denied the charges. He testified he often wore only boxer shorts around the children simply for comfort, and had the girls help shave his back because he couldn’t reach it.
